Thank you to all who voted and commented for Studio 9 Salon in WDIV’s Best Salon in Detroit Contest!!

It’s been a long, competitive summer… and it feels so great to work as a stylist in the Best Salon in Detroit!! (and I was the stylist with the most comments!)

Tyra’s Real Hair

So Tuesday, September 8th was National Real Hair Day, as I’m sure you all are pretty sick of reading about…

Tyra debuted her hair, first soaking wet, right out of the shower, then dried straight, then curled (all done on stage by her fabulous stylist, Oscar.)

She talked about how when she first started out in this business, everyone was hush hush about their extensions, until her and Toni Braxton started talking about their hair weaves.

And she really emphasized the fact that extensions, weaves, and wigs are like hats… you need to take them off from time to time, and wear them to dress yourself up.

She said this, because she showed three girls on her show that were so self concious about their real hair that they had never shown it either ever, or since they were little. They hide under their extensions. She had the girls get styled and come out for a reveal, and they all looked fabulous. The theme? Dare to bare your real hair!!

Lets look at Tyra’s. (Taken from Perez… who was alos a guest star on the show!)

I love her natural hair curly like that… it looks fierce!

National Real Hair Day!

Well, today celebrates the first official “National Real Hair Day”, thanks to Miss Tyra Banks.

I am officially extension-free today, and I hope you are too! (I know my sister isn’t– grr!)

Tyra debuts her “natural” hair today on her show. In Michigan, its showing at 4:00pm, on the CW Network. (Also, on the show my favorite celeb blogger Perez Hilton, and a behind the scenes look on the set of Gossip Girl, my favorite show!)

…on another note, I’m going to the Britney Spears concert tonight!! (Now thats a celeb that is definitley NOT extension-free!)

National Real Hair Week: Taylor Momsen’s Extensions

As past of National Real Hair Week on Laurendoeshair.com, I will be outing celebrities and their extensions all week!!

How exciting!

I’ll even teach you how to spot them =)

Today’s example: Taylor Momsen, aka Jenny Humphrey, my favorite lady on Gossip Girl

Recently, photos have surfaced of Taylor, on set in New York, wearing some new blonde, wavy extensions.

Now, Taylor’s extensions are not that bad. Normally, one can see a true difference between hair color and texture on both the fake hair and real hair. Taylor’s hair actually matches well, both with the color and texture. She has no “shelf” of real hair to be seen. More on that later!!

I do applaud her for trying something new with her hair… everyone has to have fun every once in a while! (I do, all the time!)

But Taylor’s short shag was all the rage this past year, and I don’t think she should cover up her rockin’ hair for some flowy locks. Its just not her. Its the glamorous version of her. Bring back rocker chic!!!

See for yourself:

Tuesday– Real Hair Day!!

If you read my blog, I’m sure you follow some sort of celebrity news…

And if this is true, you know that Tyra Banks is fame whoring it up for her new season of Tyra.

Tyra and her "fake" hair

Tuesday, September 8th (thats tomorrow!), Tyra will be showing off her REAL hair. No weave, no wig, no ponytail, just Tyra, au natural.

A "bald" Tyra for a past episode of ANTM

She is declaring it “National Real Hair Day”

Tyra said, “This season on ‘The Tyra Show’ we’re taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they’ve got and be proud! For the Season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that – no fake hair, I’m rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on September 8, 2009, which we’re declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!”

I’m rocking my new red hair, without my extensions. I feel naked, but I’m going to do it!

Lets call this “National Real Hair Week” on Laurendoeshair.com!!

I think this is a great idea! I’ll be following up with this, along with posts all week about extensions, wigs, and more!

And to come:
A post from Eddie, who writes “A Guy’s Point of View”. He will be telling us what he thinks of Tyra’s real hair, and about fake hair in general. We KNOW men love long hair, but do they care if it is fake, or not? We will soon find out!

Must-Have Manicures

When reading up in my latest In-Style Magazine, Icame across three amazing manicure ideas!

I showed them with the girl who does my nails at the salon, and she thought I was nuts.

But we all know how “out there” I am with my nails. I mean, come on, leopard print? Yellow? Bright orange? White? Matte? I’m telling you, I’m ahead of the trends in Sterling Heights. Someone needs to be trendy besides me, or move me to LA or Chicago, pronto!!

I’m so sick of french manicures, its not even funny. Be bold, ladies!!

The Moon Manicure
The Moon Manicure

This is the Moon Manicure. It was apparently very popular among stars in the 1920’s. I’m loving it! Black and white is very bold, and I can’t wait to try it!

The Ombre Manicure
The Ombre Manicure

The Ombre Manicure is a very awesome looking manicure, and all you need are two different polishes! It’s just different shade-mixing! With this look, they look a deep purple hue and a creamy white hue, and mixed four different shades on four different plates. The normal purple starts on the pinkie, and you end with the lightest on your thumb!

Mixed Metals Manicure
Mixed Metals Manicure

The Mixed Metals Manicure: A smattering of gold and silver over gunmetal is equal parts of grit and glamour. And getting the look is easy!! Start with two coats of a gunmetal color. Let dry. Then, sweep nail adhesive over the top. (The color is white at first– it will turn to a clear matte) Then tap a piece of gold foil over the top of your nail (shiny side down) three-four times, and peel off. Then repeat with the silver foil, and voila! Fabulous!!
