Lindsey spiced things up!!

Lindsey came in the salon tonight as a referral. She wanted a change! She had looooong hair with loooong layers. A center part. A mousy brown color with old highlights.

Lindsey has amazing fair skin and piercing blue eyes. I wanted to bring that out!! We needed to enhance that skintone and make her eyes pop.

After quite a bit of of consulting, Lindsey said, “Do whatever you think would look good on me!”

Mwhahahahaa! This is the fun part!!

This was my vision:

Enter a gorgeous cinnamon shade and a few subtle highlights around the face.

Also, an inch cut off with some nice layering and a different part.

Voila! A whole new person!

A Gossip Girl Party

The hot stars of Gossip Girl at the launch of Anna Sui’s Gossip Girl-inspired collection at the Target pop-up store last night in New York City. (Which, by the way, I am so excited about!)

The yummy hair award goes to Miss Michelle Trachtenberg, who is rockin a very rich dark auburn shade. Her hair, which is thick with a bit of wave, is believed to be extension-free.

gg

Taylor Momsen made another gross extension appearance. I want my old Taylor back!!!

…and Blake Lively still looks the same. She has always looked the same. I’m sick of the long, golden blonde hair. Be daring, Blake!! What would Serena do?!?! Go blonder, go darker, get lowlights… something!!!

gg01

…and where the heck was Leighton Meester??!!

Shhh… a celebrity secret!!

Most of the world right now is pissed off at Lindsay Lohan, becuase she colored her hair back to a beautiful, rich natural red… and then messed it all up and went BACK to bleach blonde.

red to blonde? Not so easy!
red to blonde? Not so easy!

…Which isn’t a horrible color, it just looks like crap on her.

We all know its “for a movie role”, but what you didn’t know was that only her front pieces of hair were lightened to blonde!! Tricky, tricky!

Going from red to blonde is very, very, very hard. It takes way more than 2-3 processes, if that. (Trust me, I know from experience!!)

The trick? Extensions, of course. (The word of the week!!!)

Only Lindsay’s front pieces were bleached. The rest of her hair was most likely lightened and toned to eliminate red, but never bleached. The front pieces were heavily highlighted, and the rest of the blonde is via extensions.

All over blonde is a huge no-no for a redhead. When I did this crazy step, I was stripped and bleached twice, and lost a ton of hair. (Pixie, anyone?) It has to be done in steps, and treated everytime.

Haircolor does a lot, but it sure does have it’s limits.

Kristin Ketchup: The final color

If you all remember from a previous post, Kristin Ketchup is addicted to red. She has had all sorts of red, and couldn’t decide on which one she liked best.

After thinking about it, and seeing all of your opinions, she decided on Look #6.

When I went to see her in Chicago, we did her mini makeover.

Ater that, we decided to show off her new hair in Bucktown, shopping, and getting ice cream from I-Cream! Note: My geek chic glasses. (Post about those to come!)

Kristin uses Color Shampoo (like Redken’s Color Extend) and Dry Shampoo (Like Rockaholic’s Dirty Little Secret) to preserve her color. For styling, she loves Joico’s Dry Spray Wax, and Kenra’s Silkening Gloss, as well as her own velcro rollers.

Stephanie: RED HOT!!

I love it when I get to play with color at the salon.

This past weekend, Stephanie, a new client, came in and said she wanted a change.

The color she came in with was a dark blonde, with some old highlights halfway down her head. Her green eyes told me they wanted to be seen.

We discussed dark brown hair, and I wasn’t fully satisfied. Then Stephanie said, “I used to have red back in college…” and that was it!!

So not only did she get a gorgeous shade of cinnamon red, but she got a few tiny tiny highlights of copper through her ends.

I also gave her medium length layers, and a side swept bang. Her cut was pretty plain before, with barely there layers and hair that layed there around her face.

Stephanie’s new look:

Stephanie uses a color shampoo (such as Joico’s Color Endure) to keep her red lasting longer.

Stephanie was very, very happy with her hair. What do you think?

“Killer Hair” on Lifetime

During my pleasant Saturday night at home (lame, I know), I vegged out and surfed my On Demand TV shows. I came across an interesting title, “Killer Hair”, and clicked on it.

KH_621x147

Based on the book series, “Crimes of Fashion” by Ellen Byerrum, “Killer Hair” is about a fashion reporter, Lacey, who investigates one death (that leads to another, that leads to another) that all are involved in her hot Washington DC Hair Salon.

The tagline from the book/movie is,” Can a bad haircut really kill you?”

The crazy part? Every victim is someone who cares a lot about their hair, and once found dead, all of their hair is chooped off– and ugly! (haha!)

With the help of her hairstylist and her hot detective ex boyfriend, Lacey solves the murder mystery and–omg– almost loses her hair, too!

killerhair_002-300x218

Ok, ok, sounds cheesy. But aren’t most Lifetime movies? I just love books and movies that have to do with the salon world. I got a kick out of it when the murderer ended up being —SPOILER ALERT!— The Salon Owner’s son, who killed his own father just to get the salon, and used the hair from the dead bodies for his own hair extensions.

BUT REALLY, I loved Sadie LeBlanc’s hair in this movie. Sadie plays Stella, who is Lacey’s stylist. She is rocking some killer red-copper hair with long bob.

I couldn’t find many photos for you, so I print screened from the online movie version so you could enjoy her fabulous-ness as well.

Untitled

Everything about this look is gorgeous. The color, the subtle highlights, the bangs, the layers, the lines.

I spent the entire movie wishing I had never cut my hair so I could look this good.

…and I am going to read this book (after I finish my Shopaholic series) and watch the rest of the movies, so stay tuned!!

Its been a rough 24 hours!

I’m known for being spontanious from time to time…

I used to be spontanious with my hair color a lot.

And then I found RED:
Dark red, bright red, violet red, red copper, and red mahogany.
I found some really nice, vibrant shades and they became a part of me. I was re-coloring every three weeks and I was satisfied.

my reddest of reds.
my reddest of reds.

…and then summer came along. One month into summer weather, and my hair is constantly fading into orange, no matter how often I color it. It was too much work, and too much damage. I’ll leave red for the winter months.

So here is where my spontaniety came into play.

A slow Monday at the salon.

EVOLVE your color Hair Show

Hey everyone! I’ve been such a busy little hairstylist latley!!

Sunday and Monday was the EVOLVE your color Hair Show in Dearborn, MI.

It features Presentations and Hands-on classes with JOICO/ISO, PRAVANA, and GOLDWELL/KMS CALIFORNIA.

Being a salon that uses JOICO color, some of the girls and I spent most of our time there.

Sunday was a day of presentations. My favorite was “Color my Beautiful” by ISO’s David Daniels. Studio 9 was fortunate enough to have David come to our salon two months ago for our own personal color class, so it was great to see him again!

(I apoligize in advance about the lack of pictures from this day. I only had my camera phone!)

The three models from ISO's "Color me beautiful" class.

Model #1 was a teenager with grown out highlights from four year ago. She wanted something trendy and fun, even though her mother (also at the consultation) wanted her to act her age and not play with color too much. She ended up with some beautifully placed partial highlights and a few light blue panels, which was a great way to please both her and her mother. The cut was fresh and had some stylish blunt bangs to keep her trendy.

Model #2 started with virgin hair (We LOVE to see virgin hair– its like a blank page out of a coloring book!) and David gave her a very natural looking red, with highlights and lowlights. But the most interesting on this model was the gorgeous classic wave going through the front of her hair, done with –Gasp!– rollers! (A blog to come about that amazing technique!)

Model #3 had amazing curly hair. David gave her a dark, dark red, and a few pieces of a dark purple. It was very subtle from far away, and you could really see it better up close. (Again, sorry about the lack of photos!)

MONDAY

Monday’s class was a blast!! Bonnie, Ashlee, Cherise, and I all participated in the hands on class, which was JOICO‘s Cutting and Color Clinic, where we learned one of the new “J- Cutting” Techniques, as well as playing with the K-Pak color line (which we use daily)

Photobucket Photobucket Pam’s Mannequin, the blonde version.
Pam Mezigner

The class was taught by one of my new favorite educators, Pam Mezinger, the owner of Michael Andrew Color Concept Salon in Ohio.

The cut was a trendy look to bring back to some clients, that we can also commercialize for clients without that certain edge, and the color was a fun way to jazz up the cut that we can use with several different types of colors– blondes, coppers, reds, or even party colors, highlights, or lowlights.
